Many NAS systems (like Synology, QNAP and others) go into standby by spinning down the HDD(s), but the system is still running, so there's no need for wake on lan since the NAS is always visible in your LAN and spins up the HDD(s) as soon as a network share is accessed. But many users have either just a normal PC with shares or something like a Windows Homer Server. I am trying to use SCCM to wake up PCs on a specifc VLAN. I have multiple VLANs and switches are configured to allow only SCCM server to send WOL packets. This works, however. When SCCM sends WOL packets they are broadcast to ALL VLANs. The setup is, SCCM Server is on a server VLAN, connected to a Cisco 6500 Core Switch. The Core switch is connected to multiple switch stacks consisting of Cisco 2950 edge switches. Each switch stack is configured for specific VLANs serving muliple PCs. The Core switch knows about all VLANs. For simplicity, assume following: SCCM Server is on VLAN1 (10.1.0.0 /24) connected to the Core Switch. I have a bunch of PCs on VLAN2 (10.2.0.0 /24) connected to Switch2. The PCs I want to wake up are on VLAN3 (10.3.0.0 /24) connected to Switch3. I tested WOL by sending an SCCM advertisement to two PCs on VLAN3. The PCs received the WOL packets and woke up. However, ALL PCs on VLAN2 also received the WOL packets. What I expected to see wasCore Switch to pass the WOL packets to Switch3 only. It doesn't, it broadcasts to all VLANs. The broadcasts were confirmed using Network Monitor which showed the expected subnet directed broadcast to 10.3.0.255 but it also showed broadcast from SCCM server to 255.255.255.255. That would explain why all VLANs are getting broadcast traffic but I don't understand why SCCM would be broadcasting to 255.255.255.255. Is this normal? I run multiple labs at a University and we would like to use SCCM 2007 to manage application updates and installs. I have it set up and it's working, but I have the machines in my lab go to sleep when not in use. I manage 500 or so machines so they really need to go to sleep. My problem is that if I use SCCM to advertise an app deployment it will go ahead and download the install package when the computers are on during the day, but then at night when I would like it to install (the maintenance windows) the machines are off, so the packages never install. Is there anyway to set the SCCM client to wake up the machine to run advertised tasks within the maintenance window? I know that I can advertise the task sequence as mandatory and do wake on lan, which I would do except that we have other issues with that. Our labs are spread over multiple VLans and directed broadcast traffic is not allowed across them for various security reasons. I can't use unicast wake on lan because the routers clear the ARP cache far to frequently for this to be reliable (if the machine has been asleep for longer than the ARP cache refresh rate unicast wol doesn't work because there is no ip address to be routed to anymore). If someone has more knowledge of this and has a way to get wol across VLans working without directed broadcast across the VLans or without the ARP cache being available for more than a few minutes then I'm game. For years we have used a competing product to wake up sleeping computers. I am in the process of testing out ZenWorks to replace our current solution and have run into a problem with how wake on LAN works in Zen. In my environment (and lots of other people also from what I hear), the ability to send broadcast packets is restricted because of security issues. We currently use an alternate method called Targeted Wake On LAN. This method sends a WOL packet to the IP address of the computer that is asleep. In order to work, this method requires the router to still have the sleeping PC in it 's ARP table. Once the sleeping PC is purged from the ARP table, you can no longer wake the PC up. In our environment, we extend the ARP table timeout to 3 days, giving us 3 days after turning off the PC to do the wake up. My question: Does the ZenWorks WOL service only support the broadcast packet method of wake up? Or is there some configuration option to tell the WOL service to send the wake up packet to the computer 's address instead of the subnet 's broadcast address? Hi everyone, I'm having bit of a challenge at a customer. They are implementing WOL and it was actually working very well. We've been conducting tests with a variety of machines, all but one, succesfully. The machines we tested on were all connected through the wired NIC and with fresh hardware inventory. The problem i'm having is that the machines are all laptops and netbooks and will primarily be connected through the wireless NIC. We disconnected the wired NIC and connected through wireless, triggered a hardware inventory and when that was updated on the SCCM server, we shut down the machines and connected them via the wired NIC again. After this the machines will not wakeup. I used a network monitor and discovered that SCCM is using the MAC address from the wireless NIC only, although the MAC address for the wired NIC is also present in the inventory. Edy, I believe those settings are for the virtual machies that needs to accept the WOL packets. I guess, for VM's that sents out Magic packets. There arent such settings that needs to be configured. Provided you have the port number configured in the scripts that sends Magic packets, open in the firewalls. Additionally you can try changing the Forged Transmits to 'Accept' in the vswitch configuration to see if it helps, as i guess the WOL magic packets that are transmitted containts the MAC addresses of the destination server. The problem you have is as follow. When your PC is in the off state, there is no IP-adres submitted to the system. Wake on Lan works only on MAC-adres and WOL relies on LAN by the broadcast adres in its network/subnet. So, when your router kan forward IP-port 9 from the Internet Depius site to a broadcast adres 255 (say you have 192.168.1.0/24) on your LAN, Wake on Lan will work from the Internet. Problem now is that new routers will not be able to forward a port to the broadcast adres of your LAN. It's limited to 254 on most new routers. (or you have to make an other subnet with an other range) However, when you have a Linksys BEFSR41 V2 it kan be configured with port forwarding from WAN port 9 to LAN IP: x.x.x.255 wich will work! So the fact remains, instructions on how to setup Tasks in general (which I obviously knew already since I mentioned setting up SCCM Remote Tools via SCSM) and suggesting a command line utility for WOL is a great start, but its not a complete solution. Let me point out I never expected anyone to go out and do the work for me, I was hoping someone had actually already done the work for me and they would just be able to tell me how or point me to their blog or whatever of how to do it. So in testing I've: Added a PC to a test Incident under Affected ItemsConfirmed I can wake this PC with just mc-wol.exe MAC address from a command lineTried adding the MAC address as parameter to the Task from the Device network adapter, Computer (Deployed), Generic network adapter Classes, but all this does is ask me to manually enter the Mac address, if I do so, it works, but I might as well just run the command line manually, the point of SCSM integration is so I dont need to take the time of figuring out the MAC address to begin with. I have recently setup this up on our network using SCCM to wake up the machines. The only thing you seem to off missed off you config is the ip helper-address commands. Presuming vlan 441 is the subnet your server is on. Interface Vlan441 ip address 10.4.40.2 255.255.252.0 ip helper-address (the broadcast address of the target network you wish to wake up) standby ip 10.4.40.1 standby preempt delay minimum 2 interface Vlan190 ip directed-broadcast 100 ip helper-address 10.4.40.98 (which is the address of your server) This setup has worked for me on our all Cisco network. I have NW 6.5 SP7 and Zen 7.01. I have some Wake on LAN policies that I created a long time ago and they seem to work fine. Anything I created recently doesn 't seem to want to work. I turned on Verbose logging on the Wake on LAN logs and stopped the WOL service and then restarted it. This is what I see on the console. I have never seen a machine that has firmware suspend modes.Sleep or suspend modes (S1,S3,S4 etc)are triggered by the OS. If the machine is sitting prompting for bootable media, it is not asleep. Powered off does not count as asleep either. You can perform a Bare Metal OSD with WOL enabled in the advertisement but the magic packet will have no effect on a machine that is not sleeping. If your machines support the Intel-VPRO technology you can use this functionality to reset the power on a machine that is waiting for bootable media or to power on a machine that is turned off so that it can network boot and recieve it's PXE advertisement. Provided that you have your Task sequence set up properly to skip any steps that the OS would normally perform (such as restart into PXE),that the advertisement is properly configured and assigned to a collection that contains your imported computers with the correct MAC addresses, and your machine is not stuck in the WDS cache (restart WDS to clear the cache or change the flush interval in the registry), yes it should work. If you are manually booting into PXE and you are using the same task sequence that you are using for triggering a deployment on an existing client you will need to set up the initial steps so that they are skipped if the machine is alreadyPXE-booted.
