Using a REG File Download 1. To Enable Gadgets for Current User A) Click on the Download button below to download the file below. Enable_Gadgets.reg B) If not already, make sure that you have Windows Gadget Platform checked in. C) Go to step 3. To Disable Gadgets for Only Current User A) Click on the Download button below to download the file below. Disable_Gadgets.reg 3. Click on Save, and save the.reg file to the desktop. If you don’t use the Sidebar or Desktop gadgets in Windows 7 or if you want to turn them on, you can easily get add or remove them to reclaim some desktop space. Right click on the downloaded.reg file and click on Merge. Click on Run, Yes, Yes, and OK when prompted. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to completely apply. NOTE: Gadgets that are currently running may not be disabled until you do this step. When done, you can delete the downloaded.reg files on the desktop if you like. Through the Local Group Policy Editor 1. Open the,, or Local Group Policy Editor for how you want this policy applied. In the left pane, click on to expand User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, and Desktop Gadgets. (See screenshot below) 3. In the right pane, right click on Turn off desktop gadgets and click on Edit. (See screenshot above) 4. To Enable Gadgets A) Select (dot) either Not Configured or Disabled. (See screenshot below step 6) B) If not already, make sure that you have Windows Gadget Platform checked in. C) Go to step 6. To Disable Gadgets A) Select (dot) Enabled. (See screenshot below step 6) 6. (See screenshot below) 7. Close the Local Group Policy Editor window. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to completely apply. After rebooting I went to the taskmanager again and saw the sidebar not launched. That's ok because I checkmarked it not to launche on startup. So I activate the sidebar again by entering the control panel/windows sidebar and it still does not launche. In the taskmanager the process is not activated neighter. I also have the same problem with the sidebar. After I installed the Vista Business edition on 5 computers, everything worked fine including the sidebar and I can add gadgets. But after a few restarts the sidebar stopped working and it did not give an error and is not running in Task Manager. If you try and restart the sidebar, nothing happens and no error comes up. If you try and install a new gadget now it says 'Unspecified Error' and nothing happens afterwards. I am having this same issue with the Ultimate edition. I have tried launching the Sidebar in every way I can think of and it does not open. I have tried under multiple logins. I also get no process showing up under task manager.
